Europe First — Part 3 of 4
At Capio S:t Göran Hospital in Stockholm, a South Korean AI now reads the mammogram, and a radiologist confirms. Lunit’s software holds one of the two independent reads Swedish screening requires — the first time a breast-screening centre has trusted an AI with that role. In a study of more than 55,000 Swedish women, a single radiologist working with the software caught more cancers, and recalled fewer healthy women, than two radiologists reading together. It is the clearest proof yet of how an Asian company wins in Europe: with local evidence, European certification, and a European base, earned in that order.
The Korean AI Sweden Validated
In June 2023, Lunit signed a three-year agreement with Capio S:t Göran, a large Stockholm hospital, to run its INSIGHT MMG mammography software across the screening of roughly 78,000 women a year. European screening is built on double reading: two specialists examine each mammogram. At Capio S:t Göran the AI now performs one of those two reads, making it the first breast centre to use AI as an independent reader rather than a supporting tool. The radiologists still make the final call, and the recall decision stays with their consensus.
The evidence came from Swedish data, not a vendor’s brochure. The ScreenTrustCAD study followed more than 55,000 women screened at the hospital and tested the software against standard double reading. The finding was precise: a single radiologist working with Lunit’s software detected more cancers than two radiologists reading in tandem, and recalled fewer healthy women for needless follow-up. On its own the software matched, and slightly trailed, the two-radiologist standard on detection; paired with one radiologist, it bettered the pair. For a system judged on both missed cancers and false recalls, that is the result that counts: the AI can safely take one of the two reader slots.
Lunit is a genuine start-up, not a conglomerate’s side project. Founded in Seoul in 2013 and listed on the Kosdaq market since 2022, it runs its European operations from a subsidiary set up in the Netherlands in 2023. It posted record revenue of ₩45.8 billion in the first half of 2026, carried by an overseas business that grew after its 2024 acquisition of Volpara, a New Zealand screening-analytics firm. The Swedish contract is one reference among a growing international book, and it carries outsized weight for where it landed and what it was allowed to do.
Why a European Hospital Reached to Seoul
European radiology is short of radiologists, and screening programmes built on double reading collide with a workforce that has not grown to match an ageing population. The gap is structural — exactly the kind of shortage a proven algorithm can absorb. Sweden did not adopt Lunit for novelty; it adopted a tool that let a stretched service hold its standard with the staff it had.
Certification made that possible. Lunit’s INSIGHT MMG has carried the CE mark the European market requires since 2020, three years before the Swedish contract, and the company has kept certifying new products, including a 2022 CE mark for its PD-L1 pathology analysis. The mark is the entry ticket: it is why a Korean company could be trusted with an independent-reader role that an uncertified product never could. Certification is what turns an interesting technology into a procurable one.
Behind the clinical case sits a commercial one European buyers understand. Lunit has built a platform with Microsoft, on Azure, that lets hospitals fine-tune its diagnostic models on their own patient data, reaching into the reporting software radiologists already use. A hospital taking on a three-year clinical dependency wants to know the vendor will still be standing at the end of it, and a global platform partner answers that before it is asked.
What matters is not the single contract but the direction it points: Europe has begun to entrust the seats it cannot staff to Asian technology, and those seats will only multiply.
